Western Way of Learning
What to expect when studying at Western
Transitioning to university means adjusting to a different way of studying. Here we take you through what to expect when studying at Western Sydney University.
A Different Style of Learning
The teaching styles you will encounter at Western Sydney University and the study skills required might be very different from what you have been used to in your home country. At the University 'rote' learning (or memorising information) is not the main method of teaching.
You will be required to understand and apply concepts and theories, and to critically examine and present a range of arguments to support your decisions.
The University monitors the academic progression of all students to ensure you pass enough units to progress to graduation. Progression identifies poor academic performance while also giving you an opportunity to address your performance and seek counselling advice.
All students beginning at Western Sydney University will undergo a period of adjustment. This section will provide information about the general academic system at the University and help to prepare you for what to expect during your study.
To be successful at university, it is important that you:
- Understand what is required of you in terms of study and assessment tasks at your university
- Attend all of your lectures, tutorial and examinations
- Do not plagiarise.
Students who do not meet the University’s academic progression requirements may be excluded from study. Being excluded means that you cannot study at this University for a period of time because your academic progress has not been satisfactory.
Academic Progression Support
Academic Advising
If you are concerned about your grades and need advice, please contact your respective Academics in your School as soon as possible.
Counselling Support
If you are facing challenges or unexpected problems that are impacting your studies, Western Sydney University offers counselling and learning support through Student Support Services on campus.
Reassessment of Progression Outcome
To request a reassessment of your Progression Outcome due to a grade change, contact the Results and Progression Team by submitting an enquiry through WesternNow.
Progression Show Cause and Appeals
If you have been identified for Conditional Enrolment or Exclusion when you receive your Academic Standing Outcome, and you decide to Show Cause, you can find helpful information on the Progression Show Cause webpage.
You will be expected to participate in class discussions and to question your lecturers and tutors if you do not understand what is being taught and discussed. In Western Sydney University, it is not considered bad manners to express views that are different from those expressed by your teacher. In fact, you will be encouraged to do so.
You will be required to study a full load of subjects per teaching session.
Study is undertaken on a university campus involving a combination of lectures and tutorials. You will be required to attend many hours of classes each week or you may be penalised if you do not comply. You will also be expected to spend a substantial amount of unstructured time on individual reading and research outside of class.
Assessment methods vary from program to program. To pass most subjects you will be required to complete a number of assessment tasks or assignments during each semester. These may include essays, research papers, oral presentations, fieldwork, practicals, midterm and/or final exams. At the beginning of each teaching session you will be given a subject outline of these tasks and assignments, including the deadlines (final dates) for completion. If you fail to meet these deadlines you may be penalised even though you have completed your work.
Students will be advised of the particular method(s) to be used at the commencement of their program. Refer to the Assessment Policy for further information about assessment methods and practices.
To produce good assignments, you should:
- Know your program outline, program objectives, important dates, and recommended readings (always seek clarification if you do not understand what you ve been asked to do)
- Read the set readings (e.g. text book) as well as recommended references
- Write academically
- Manage your time well
Leave of absence from study will only be granted in compassionate or compelling circumstances that prevent you from attending classes. For international students, if you are granted a leave of absence your student visa may be impacted, and you may need to apply for a new student visa to remain in Indonesia to complete your program.
